Form Follows Function!
Our rules are quite simple, and no different than a commercial cow herd. Udders, feet, fertility, calving ease. Since we started in the purebred business it's been our intention to offer outcross genetics that become an alternative while not sacrificing quality. The fundamentals should never be sacrificed as it costs not only the cowherd but possibly a customer. In business honesty and integrity come first and foremost! If we wouldn't use it in our herd we sure wouldn't expect you to put it in your herd. There are no suprises with bad feet or bad bags, if you wouldn't own them we sure wouldn't want to either. Our breeding season revolves around 3 cycles and if something come up open at preg checking time they are shipped...they don't become a donor cow! The cattle are managed in a common sense manner that revolves around limit feeding the cows from early November until calving time. By restricting the cows to a certain amount of feed they are forced to adapt and with an equal share for each of them. The cows are fed 25-30lbs of year old hay until calving where they are fed better quality hay and cereal silage. While labor inputs are certainly a growing concern and cost in agriculture we haven't swath grazed as it's then difficult to limit the feed and identify the poor doing cattle. The cow herd doesn't receive supplemental grain as this become not only an added expense but added work as well. The cattle are summered on both dryland tame grass and native grass, allowing the cows to show off their abilities.
